For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
They're choosing to ignore what they know deep down, that God spoke everything into existence way back in the beginning. The heavens, the earth rising up from the waters, all of it happened because God said so.
Some people pretend they don't know that God created everything, but they're just choosing to look the other way.
📚 Historical Context
In the first century AD, the Apostle Peter wrote his second letter to encourage early Christians who were facing mockery from skeptics denying Christ's promised return. He referenced the Genesis account of creation, where God spoke the heavens and earth into existence, with the earth formed from water and sustained by it, to highlight God's sovereign power and past judgments like the flood. This was to remind believers that God's word is reliable and that scoffers willingly overlook these truths.
